A root canal is a procedure used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. Although normal tooth decay can become increasingly worse and eventually lead to a root canal, often times blunt trauma necessitates a root canal as well.
A root canal may sound intimidating at first but essentially isn’t much more than a dental filling. In essence, a root canal simply consists of a dental filling deeper into the root space, as opposed to only the tooth itself. A root canal cleans and removes the infected or irritated nerve out of the tooth, causing a great relief in swelling, pain, and discomfort.
